Every time when I read a picture book to my kids, I always have a goal to achieve, such as teaching new vocabulary, or certain concepts.

Today I read a picture book - The Crocodile and the Dentist to my Grade 1 kids. The story is simple and straightforward so I decided to spend more time on the vocabulary that I want to teach them.

Through the story, the kids leared these 3 words -

1. brave: someone that is not scared of anything

2. awful: something that is terrible

3. the worst: something that is very very bad when comparing with the other things

The kids had no problem understanding the meanings of the words, but when I asked them to do the reading comprehension exercise by themselves the problem occurred. (Refer to the questions below.)

I guess the problem is because they can't read to themselves; otherwise, it should be easy for them to pick up the answers from the choices I made. The evidence for this is when I read the choices for some of the kids who chose the wrong answers at the first place , they all gave me the correct ones once they heard all the choices I read.

The conclusion is that the kids I encountered should have no problems with listening comprehension. However, they certainly need to spend more time on reading in order to comprehense what they've read better.
